Greta Gerwig Expresses ‘Genuine Fear’ Regarding Direction of New Chronicles of Narnia Films

Greta Gerwig is expressing her apprehension about taking the lead in a new series of Chronicles of Narnia movies. As the director of Barbie, she has been chosen to write and direct at least two films for Netflix based on the beloved C.S. Lewis novels. In a recent podcast appearance, Gerwig revealed that she is “terrified” to begin working on the project. She further explained that being scared is actually a positive sign for her. It signifies that she is stepping out of her comfort zone and taking on a formidable challenge. Gerwig stated that she finds the prospect of working on the Narnia movies extraordinary and exhilarating.

Despite her involvement with the Chronicles of Narnia, Gerwig has aspirations that extend beyond the realms of Barbie Land or Narnia’s Wild Lands of the North. She hopes to create a diverse portfolio of films throughout her career, ranging from big productions to smaller, more intimate projects. The opportunity to work on another grand-scale project like Narnia is both thrilling and intimidating for her.

When asked if she would consider directing a James Bond movie, Gerwig hesitated. She replied with a humorous remark, indicating that she would rather stick with Lions and Barbie dolls for now. However, she did mention that she has a positive relationship with Barbara Broccoli, the producer of the James Bond franchise, leaving room for possibilities in the future.

Back in 2018, Netflix announced its plans to adapt The Chronicles of Narnia’s seven fantasy novels into new films. The book series, which originated in 1950 with The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, revolves around four British children who find refuge from World War II in a magical alternate reality filled with mystical creatures and enchantment. The Narnia books have been previously adapted, including three movies by Disney: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe in 2005, Prince Caspian in 2008, and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader in 2010.
